Bentley Torcal 2026: grille design, digital crystal displays and reveal date

Bentley's first production electric car doesn't need the traditional grille that once cooled a big petrol engine, but the British marque wasn't about to give up one of its most recognisable symbols. On the new Torcal, the grille has turned from a functional part into a standalone decorative feature, with three-dimensional “floating” diamonds — and illuminated ones at that: owners can light the pattern up or switch the illumination off for a more understated look.

The diamond motif first appeared on Bentley cars back in the 1920s, when a wire mesh grille protected the radiator from stone chips and road debris. The same motif later spread to switches, metal controls, seat upholstery and interior trim; on current models, diamonds even show up in the design of the Bentayga's headlights.

On the Torcal, the historic pattern gets its most striking reinterpretation in decades. Bentley calls the new design a jewel-like floating diamond grille, meant to resemble a piece of jewellery. It keeps the brand's recognisable face, even though the electric car no longer needs the grille's original practical function.

Bentley took an unusual approach with the digital instruments too. Instead of relying purely on computer graphics, designers commissioned a set of hand-cut crystal objects from British company Cumbria Crystal, then filmed how light passed through their facets and used the resulting footage to build the interface visuals. The small variations and natural imperfections of handcraft are meant to make the digital environment feel less sterile.

Bentley previously revealed another unconventional feature of the Torcal — its own soundtrack, called Bentley Dynamic Symphony. It doesn't directly imitate an internal combustion engine: the piece is performed on drums, viola and bass guitar, with a rhythmic character built around Bentley's V8 engines. The sound responds to driver inputs, with the tempo rising under acceleration and easing back during gentle driving.

The Torcal will become Bentley's fourth permanent model family, after the Continental GT, Flying Spur and Bentayga. The name comes from the El Torcal de Antequera limestone landscape in Andalusia. It is also set to become Bentley's first fully electric car and to open up a new luxury urban SUV class for the brand, following on from Bentley's first electric SUV.

The full reveal of the Bentley Torcal takes place in London on 23 September 2026. Technical details — power output, battery data and official range — haven't been published yet: on the manufacturer's website, energy consumption and range figures are listed as pending European certification.
