Most Reliable Car Brand 2026: J.D. Power, Consumer Reports and OCU Compared

There isn't one "most reliable brand" in 2026 without specifying the methodology first. Motor1 points to Toyota and Lexus as the market's benchmarks, but the latest studies paint a messier picture: J.D. Power puts Lexus in first place, Consumer Reports ranks Lexus, Subaru and Toyota in its top three, and Europe's OCU opens its ranking with Lexus and Subaru. The direction lines up. The order doesn't.

The clearest example is the J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study 2026. The study is based on responses from 33,268 original owners of 2023 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership and covers 184 problem types. The lower the PP100 score — problems per 100 vehicles — the better the result.

Here, Lexus did come out on top among premium brands with 151 PP100. But the mass-market win didn’t go to Toyota — it went to Buick, at 160 PP100, followed by MINI at 168 and Chevrolet at 178. Toyota scored 185 PP100. Even so, the Toyota Motor Corporation swept eight individual class awards: winners included the Lexus IS, UX and GX, plus the Toyota Corolla, Camry, Tacoma, Sienna and 4Runner.

That distinction matters. A handful of strong Toyota models doesn’t make the brand itself the outright winner of the ranking.

Consumer Reports looks at reliability differently. Its current ranking of new cars puts Lexus, Subaru and Toyota up front, with Honda and BMW rounding out the top five. So even among major American studies, only the leader — Lexus — lines up, while the rest of the order shifts because of differences in sample and methodology.

There’s a European angle, too. Back in March, SPEEDME.RU covered the OCU ranking: the organization surveyed more than 85,000 drivers and came up with a different order — Lexus, Subaru, Toyota and Suzuki. That ranking accounts not just for whether something breaks, but how serious the fault is, and the vehicle’s age and mileage.

So the list of Lexus, Toyota, Subaru, Mazda, Honda, Buick and Hyundai is best treated as a group of strong contenders, not a single objective ranking. It’s especially shaky to automatically file Mazda among the leaders these days: in J.D. Power 2026, the brand sits at 210 PP100 — slightly worse than the industry average of 204 PP100 — and Consumer Reports has flagged a noticeable slide in its standing after issues with some newer models.

The picture shifts even more once you zoom in on a specific model. SPEEDME.RU already showed this with the Honda Passport: Consumer Reports gave the new SUV a predicted reliability score of 97 out of 100, even though Honda doesn’t top the overall brand ranking.

That’s exactly why the badge on the hood is only the first filter. When buying, it makes more sense to check the generation, model year, engine, transmission and specific trim separately. Even J.D. Power flags another important trend: in 2026, the average problem rate hit 204 PP100, the highest since the study’s methodology changed in 2022, with infotainment, smartphone connectivity and software among the leading sources of complaints.

Powertrain type shifts the numbers, too. In J.D. Power, gas-powered vehicles scored 198 PP100, conventional hybrids 213, EVs 237, and plug-in hybrids 281. That doesn’t mean any given gas car is more reliable than any given hybrid — these figures describe average results by category, not a guaranteed outcome for one specific model.

If you still need the most defensible answer to "which car brand is most reliable," today that’s Lexus: the brand leads J.D. Power, sits at the top of Consumer Reports, and also takes first place in Europe’s OCU study. Toyota and Subaru stay close behind, but their standing depends much more heavily on which methodology you pick.
