BYD unveiled the third-generation Tang EV at the Chengdu Auto Show — a five-seat SUV with air suspension, a 300 kW motor and 10-70% charging in about five minutes.

BYD brought the third generation of the Tang to the Chengdu Auto Show, and SPEEDME.RU photographers shot the new model directly at the stand on the day of its world premiere. The new Tang EV looks noticeably different, has switched to a five-seat layout, and now sits below the huge seven-seat DaTang EV, which reached the Chinese market in June.

The live photos show off the new look clearly: a fully enclosed front end, a thin light bar running across the nose, large vertical air intakes and a roof-mounted LiDAR. The show car wore a striking two-tone finish — a dark green body paired with a light-colored roof and pillars.

BYD is positioning the third Tang as a large, five-seat, tech-forward SUV. It measures 5,045x1,980x1,760 mm with a 2,950 mm wheelbase. For comparison, the DaTang EV is noticeably bigger: 5,263 mm long with a 3,130 mm wheelbase, and its cabin seats seven. In effect, BYD is splitting two similarly named models by purpose: the Tang bets on five seats and a more compact body, while the DaTang goes for maximum space for a large family.

The confirmed version of the Tang EV so far gets a rear electric motor rated at 300 kW, or roughly 408 hp. It's paired with second-generation Blade batteries with capacities of 88.682 and 105.792 kWh. Depending on the version, range runs to 730, 830 or 850 km on the Chinese CLTC cycle. Top speed reaches 250 km/h.

Another key selling point is charging speed. BYD says that at normal temperatures, the battery can go from 10 to 70% in about five minutes. The new Tang also gets the DiSus-A body control system with dual-chamber air suspension and road-surface pre-scanning.

The God’s Eye B driver assistance suite is standard across the whole lineup. Inside, BYD moved away from the old Tang's screen layout. The centerpiece is now a very wide 30-inch panel, with a separate, narrow info display mounted above it. BYD revealed this dashboard architecture ahead of the show, and the car itself made its public debut on August 21.

Pricing for the third-generation Tang hasn't been announced yet. That's especially interesting given the already on-sale DaTang EV, which starts at 239,900 yuan and offers up to 950 km on the CLTC cycle. The new Tang will need to find its place below its bigger sibling while still carrying noticeably pricier hardware like air suspension, LiDAR and ultra-fast charging.
