Hongqi showed its first body-on-frame off-roader, the G919, at the Chengdu Motor Show. Four motors make 843 hp, and it hits 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds.

SPEEDME.RU journalists photographed the new Hongqi G919 at the Chengdu Motor Show 2026 — the Chinese premium brand’s first body-on-frame off-roader. The stand featured a grey-green five-seat vehicle with a full-size spare wheel, an expedition roof rack, a side ladder, rock sliders and all-terrain tires.

Despite being one of the headline reveals on Hongqi’s stand, the Chengdu showing isn’t a world premiere. The production version of the G919 debuted this spring at the Beijing Auto Show, and the official name was revealed in June. Sales on the Chinese market are expected to start before the end of 2026.

The expedition gear was factory-fitted

Judging by our correspondent’s photos, Hongqi didn’t stop at styling cues borrowed from classic off-roaders. A real spare wheel is mounted on the tailgate, a metal ladder leads up to the roof rack, and the lower body is protected by heavy unpainted plastic cladding. Vertical taillights, near-vertical body sides and a side-hinged tailgate reinforce the expedition-truck look.

Most of the equipment on display is claimed by the manufacturer to be factory-installed. The list includes a reinforced front bumper, tow hooks, rock sliders, an expedition platform, auxiliary lighting and mounts for either the spare wheel or an external cargo case. The wheel arches are sized for dedicated mud-terrain tires.

According to certification data, the G919 measures 5,135 mm long, 2,050 mm wide and 1,950 mm tall, with a 2,900 mm wheelbase. Curb weight is 3,175 kg, with a maximum permitted mass of 3,755 kg. The car seats five, rides on 20-inch wheels with 275/60 tires, and has a top speed of 180 km/h.

The show car’s cabin is trimmed in perforated terracotta leather. Large displays sit ahead of the driver and on the center console, but the core off-road functions haven’t been buried entirely in a touchscreen menu. The center tunnel keeps chunky physical controllers, a row of hard buttons, a wireless charging pad and cupholders.

Four motors put out 843 hp

The Hongqi G919 uses a series hybrid layout. A 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine works as a generator, while four individually controlled electric motors drive the wheels. Combined output reaches 620 kW, or 843 hp, with 1,320 Nm of peak torque. Independent torque control at each wheel lets the system redistribute power in real time and mimic the effect of locking differentials.

The traction battery has a capacity of roughly 63 kWh. Claimed range on electric power alone, without the gasoline generator running, is up to 280 km on the Chinese CLTC cycle. Certification filings also list a 220 km figure under the stricter WLTC methodology.

Despite weighing more than 3.1 tonnes, the off-roader is claimed to hit 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. The standard minimum turning radius is rated at 5.3 meters, shrinking to as little as 2.5 meters when the four-motor differential control system is engaged. It can spin the wheels on each side in opposite directions, allowing the G919 to turn almost on the spot.

The G919 uses a separate ladder-frame chassis rather than unibody construction. Torsional rigidity of the frame is rated at 9,500 Nm per degree. The manufacturer also cites front and rear mechanical locking differentials, a so-called energy-based center lock, and ten driving modes for different surfaces.

A lidar unit sits on the roof. Published materials disagree on the underlying platform: Hongqi’s Russian distributor cites the Huawei Qiankun ADS 5 system, while China FAW references the in-house Hongqi Sinan 5.0 suite and a 384-line Zhuoyu lidar. The final electronics lineup for production trims will likely become clear only after the model’s official launch.

How much will the Hongqi G919 cost

An official price list hasn’t been published yet. Chinese trade media tentatively place the G919 above the 500,000 yuan mark.

Hongqi hasn’t officially confirmed the G919 for any export market yet. Around the Beijing premiere, brand representatives didn’t rule out an eventual launch abroad, though timing, trim levels and pricing remain unconfirmed. Domestic Chinese sales are due to start before the end of 2026, so any export decision is likely to come only after the model launches at home.

Judging by the show car, the G919 looks considerably closer to production reality than to concept-car status: it already has a fully finished cabin, production-ready lighting and a functional expedition kit. The biggest unknowns that remain are the final price, the list of driver-assistance features, and any plans for official sales outside China.
