Volkswagen Amarok 2027: platform, power and release date for South America

Volkswagen is now effectively building two different Amaroks. At a festival in the Brazilian city of Barretos, the company publicly unveiled a camouflaged new model for South America for the first time. Launch is set for 2027, and Volkswagen is already calling it the most powerful Amarok in history while directly promising electrification. Volkswagen do Brasil's official statement stresses that local design, engineering, testing and validation divisions are involved in the project.

That distinction matters, because this pickup won't replace the current Amarok worldwide. The global model has officially been built on the Ford Ranger platform since 2022, as confirmed by Volkswagen Group itself. That's the version already on sale in Russia for 8.99 million rubles. South America, meanwhile, still uses an updated first-generation pickup, and its successor is being developed as a standalone regional project.

This is where the Chinese chapter of the story begins. The new Amarok is linked to the SAIC Maxus Interstellar X architecture, known outside China as the LDV Terron 9. Volkswagen's current official release doesn't name the platform, so the chassis origin can't yet be treated as a fully confirmed specification. However, Automotive Business quotes Volkswagen South America chief Alexander Seitz as saying that roughly half of the components have been changed relative to the original Chinese project.

The most intriguing version so far exists only at the level of journalistic reporting. Motor1 Brasil reports on a future Amarok 800 TSI with a plug-in hybrid system producing over 470 hp and 800 Nm of torque. The all-wheel-drive pickup is said to sprint to 100 km/h in under five seconds. Volkswagen has officially confirmed only that the new truck will be electrified and the most powerful Amarok yet — the company hasn't named the 800 TSI badge, the 470 hp figure, or the performance numbers.

The contrast with the outgoing trucks will be stark. The current South American Amarok uses a 3.0-liter V6 TDI making 258 hp, with a brief boost to 272 hp, while even the sportiest W600 version of today's global generation keeps a 250-hp diesel. If the reported 470-hp PHEV figures hold up, this won't just be a platform swap — it will be a complete overhaul of the model's technical concept.

The Terron 9 donor already shows how far this unification can go: the Australian version gets a 2.5-liter diesel making 163 kW, or roughly 222 hp, and 520 Nm, and can tow up to 3.5 tonnes while carrying over a tonne of payload. But those figures shouldn't be carried over to the Amarok — Volkswagen says the project has undergone deep in-house tuning of its own.

The next genuinely important milestone will be the publication of the factory specification. For now, the confirmed facts are the market, the 2027 timeline, electrification, and a promise of record power for the Amarok nameplate. Everything else — the Chinese architecture, the 800 Nm, the 470-plus horsepower, and the sub-five-second sprint — still needs separate confirmation from Volkswagen.
