Jeep Cherokee Hybrid System: Who Really Builds It and Where

The Japanese origin of the Jeep Cherokee’s hybrid hardware is now official. BluE Nexus, Aisin and Denso announced they jointly developed a two-motor hybrid drive module for the new crossover. The Cherokee’s ties to these suppliers had previously circulated as industry chatter, but the companies themselves had never confirmed it directly.

The module combines a high-efficiency transaxle with two electric motors, and control of the motors and the voltage-boosting converter has been tuned specifically for the Cherokee’s powertrain. Aisin builds the transaxle and electric motors in North Carolina, while the inverter comes from a Denso plant in Tennessee — meaning the Japanese technology is effectively localized right in North America.

The Cherokee itself pairs a 1.6-liter turbocharged gas engine with two electric motors and a traction battery. Converted to familiar units, combined output is about 210 hp and 230 lb-ft (312 Nm) of torque. Claimed fuel economy is roughly 37 mpg combined, with a range of more than 500 miles on a full tank. All-wheel drive comes standard across the lineup.

Back in March, BluE Nexus’ involvement in the project was still being described as coming from sources. Now Aisin and Denso have officially confirmed not just the partnership, but also how production of the key components is split. That makes this more than a routine supplier story: the Cherokee has become an example of how full-hybrid technology from Japan’s hybrid pioneers is being used by an American brand — and built in the U.S. at the same time.

Still, calling the system a “Toyota hybrid” would be inaccurate. BluE Nexus does combine electrification expertise from Aisin, Denso and Toyota, but the specific module used in the Cherokee was developed and supplied by BluE Nexus, Aisin and Denso for Stellantis.
