Audi has broken with auto-show convention by sending its concept car onto public roads. The Concept C prototype, which debuted at the IAA in September, was fitted with turn indicators, wipers, and a horn to pass registration and wear license plates. For a concept, that’s a rare move—most show cars aren’t even capable of moving under their own power—so it reads as a clear statement of intent.Concept C is an exception in more ways than one. A rear electric motor pushes the coupe to 145 km/h, and the model is set to enter production closer to 2027 in a noticeably more powerful configuration. Audi says the sports car sits on a new Volkswagen Group platform, which points to kinship with the upcoming electric Porsche Boxster and Cayman. All-wheel drive with two electric motors is also expected down the line. The battery is positioned behind the driver, echoing the spirit of classic mid-engined sports cars. The suspension was developed from scratch, and the prototype’s mass is comparable to the previous Audi R8—an equation that promises balanced weight distribution and an engaging feel on the road. Audi notes that the design is 87 percent aligned with the future production model. A fixed roof isn’t on the cards: the car will be an electric cabriolet with a folding hardtop.Audi aims to claim the niche of emotionally charged electric sports cars at a time when rivals are few. If the performance lands in R8 territory, Concept C could emerge as one of the standout EV premieres of the decade’s closing years.
