BMW iDrive X: expanded CarPlay, HUD and Panoramic Vision for Apple Maps only

BMW's iDrive X expands CarPlay, but only Apple Maps gets HUD and Panoramic Vision turn-by-turn. EV battery preconditioning and full routing require BMW Maps.

BMW has expanded CarPlay support in its new iDrive X system, but the limitations are hard to miss. Full integration is reserved for Apple Maps: it’s the only app that can project turn-by-turn directions onto Panoramic Vision, the wide display strip at the base of the windshield. Waze and Google Maps don’t get that capability because Apple doesn’t pass along the data third-party apps need for projection. The same restriction applies to the head-up display (HUD).

At the same time, BMW says the system lets you blend CarPlay with its native services: you can keep Apple CarPlay on the main screen while Panoramic Vision shows charging stations, your route, and BMW Maps data. iDrive X also syncs CarPlay wallpaper colors with the cabin’s ambient lighting, creating a cohesive visual theme.

CarPlay’s limitations are most noticeable for EV owners: full route planning with battery preconditioning before a fast charge is only possible through BMW Maps. Apple Maps can show charging stations but doesn’t control battery state.

Another drawback is the Hey BMW voice assistant, which often triggers by accident and doesn’t yet allow changing the wake word.

iDrive X is a strong step forward, yet the gap between Apple Maps and third-party navigation makes it clear that truly deep CarPlay integration is still some distance away.
