Volvo EX30 V2L: how 3 kW power output and Plug & Charge work

Up to 3 kW of power can now be drawn directly from the Volvo EX30 battery. For some cars already sold, no hardware change is required: a free OTA update activates Vehicle-to-Load. When the battery level falls below 20%, the car automatically stops supplying external devices.

Volvo announced V2L back in February, but at that point the EX30 was only hardware-ready for the new function. Official notes for software 2.1.2 now confirm that it has actually been activated. A separate adapter connected to the charging port is required. It can power tools, a refrigerator, a coffee machine, an e-bike or camping equipment.

The battery specifications help show how much usable energy is available. The EX30 is offered with batteries rated at 51 and 69 kWh. Calculating from a full charge down to the 20% cut-off, and ignoring losses, that equals roughly 40.8–55.2 kWh of energy. At a continuous 3 kW load, that would theoretically provide 13.6–18.4 hours of operation, although the real result will be lower.

There is an important limitation: V2L does not turn the EX30 into a full-fledged home power station. The car can supply a connected device, but Volvo does not state that this function supports standard power delivery to a home network or the public grid.

At the same time, the EX30 is getting Plug & Charge. At a compatible station, the car identifies itself and starts charging without a separate card or app. Volvo is also expanding its charging ecosystem: from the fourth quarter of 2026, owners of electric Volvo models in Europe will be able to use more than 20,000 Tesla Superchargers through the Volvo Cars app. Plug & Charge itself depends on the market and infrastructure and is listed by Volvo for the EX30 from model year 2026.

The V2L rollout is not universal either. According to Volvo, the function is intended for compatible EX30s with CCS2 in EMEA, APAC and Latin America, but is not activated in the United States, Canada, Mexico, South Korea, Taiwan or Japan. Software version 2.1.2 is dated August 25, and the manufacturer says the OTA download should become available about three weeks after release. In some markets, the update is not yet available for Ultra cars with the 22 kW onboard charger.
