Ford partners with Renault to deliver budget EVs on AmpR: a Fiesta successor due 2028 and a compact crossover, with affordable LFP batteries in the plan.

Ford has pulled an unexpected move in Europe: it has struck a strategic partnership with Renault and will launch at least two budget-friendly electric models on the French brand’s AmpR EV platform. The first is expected in early 2028 — a successor to the Fiesta, built on the Renault 5 architecture and set to be assembled alongside its donor at the ElectriCity complex in Douai, France. A second newcomer — a small electric crossover, conceptually linked to the Renault 4 — is also in the plan, with timing still undisclosed.

Ford emphasizes this won’t be simple badge-engineering. The company says it will apply its own design, in-house development and signature tuning so the cars feel like Fords in both driving character and interfaces. Even so, the hardware will unsurprisingly be close to Renault’s: a front electric motor rated somewhere around 121–215 hp and battery packs of 40 or 52 kWh. By 2028, the plan calls for a switch to more affordable LFP chemistry.

Why make this move? After the Fiesta’s exit and the end of Focus production, Ford’s European lineup has grown pricier and is now dominated by SUVs and MPVs, while demand for electric crossovers has turned out weaker than hoped. Returning to the mass market via a ready-made platform is a fast way to cut development costs and try to win back share — and for a brand long associated with nimble small cars, a Fiesta-sized EV with genuine Ford feel looks like a timely way back into the conversation.
