Since 1956, Ford Motor Company has run its core operations from the vast headquarters known as the Glass House in Dearborn, Michigan. In the coming years, this nearly 100,000-square-meter landmark is set to be reduced to rubble as the automaker prepares to move into a new base. For a brand long associated with industrial modernity, the shift feels like a quiet passing of the torch.

The 12-story Glass House packs in conference rooms and workspaces for 2,000 employees, along with a 70,000-square-foot lobby and a cafeteria. Height gives way to footprint in the next chapter: the upcoming headquarters will have only four floors, yet its total area will be more than double that of its predecessor. Construction is expected to wrap up by 2027.

As for the Glass House, Ford said the building would be phased out over the next 18 months and then completely demolished—a measured end to a defining piece of the company’s skyline.
