Mercedes has taken the final prototypes of its new Little G to northern testing grounds. This compact SUV will serve as the entry point into the expanding G-Class lineup. Spotted during winter testing in the Arctic, the model confirms a key design principle: despite its smaller dimensions, it retains the iconic G-Class body styling, three-window side profile, and externally mounted spare tire. The test vehicle is electric, with a large battery pack clearly visible beneath the body. The spare tire compartment is repurposed to store the charging cable, similar to the EQ G-Class. However, the Little G will feature its own design elements, including a different daytime running light signature in a semicircular shape and roof rails that emphasize its more lifestyle-oriented role.A key difference lies in its entirely new architecture. Former technical director Markus Schäfer stated directly that the platform was built from the ground up, employing a "mini-ladder-frame" scheme with character closely aligned to the larger G-Class. Most components, including body panels and even door handles, were developed specifically for this model to maintain the family's authenticity. While Mercedes has not yet revealed the full powertrain lineup, insiders suggest the Little G might be offered exclusively as an electric vehicle. Chief designer Gorden Wagener notes that the newcomer will be "more modern than the big G-Class" while staying within the iconic style framework. The model is slated for launch in 2027, positioning the Little G as a direct competitor to the upcoming Land Rover Defender Sport. This move signals the formation of a new segment for compact premium SUVs, with Mercedes making the first strategic play.
