Volkswagen has announced the start of mass production for the new electric crossover ID.UNYX 08, developed in partnership with Chinese technology company Xpeng. This model marks the first result of the partnership formed in 2023 and is part of the German conglomerate's strategy to regain its position in the world's largest automotive market. The ID.UNYX 08 will go on sale in China in the first half of 2026. The electric SUV is being manufactured at Volkswagen's plant in Hefei, which has an annual production capacity of up to 350,000 vehicles. The same facility also assembles the Cupra Tavascan crossover for export to Europe. This new model is a key element of Volkswagen's extensive electrification program in China. By 2026, the company plans to introduce over 20 new electric and hybrid vehicles, with around 50 NEV (new energy vehicle) models expected to hit the market by 2030.The collaboration with Xpeng has allowed Volkswagen to accelerate its vehicle development process. According to the company, the new architecture for the Chinese market reduces development time by approximately 30%. As a result, the ID.UNYX 08 reached series production in just 24 months. The partnership also includes the use of Xpeng's technologies, such as autonomous driving systems and proprietary Turing AI processors. A second model developed jointly by the two companies is expected to launch later in 2026.For Volkswagen, the Chinese market remains crucial, though recent years have proven challenging. The company has lost its leading position to local brands like BYD and Geely, which have introduced more affordable and technologically advanced electric vehicles at a faster pace. This new project with Xpeng aims to help the German automotive giant close this gap and reclaim its share in the world's largest car market.
