This ranking spotlights five of the safest pickup trucks on the road today, based on IIHS statistics. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety evaluates how well vehicles and their safety systems protect people in real-world crashes and controlled tests, and its verdicts carry real weight for buyers.

Toyota Tundra

The third-generation full-size pickup went into production in December 2021. For 2025 it adds new options, including a TRD Rally package and a trailer camera with Wi‑Fi. The Tundra emerged as the safest truck on the market, taking home the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award. That blend of updates and recognition makes it a confident choice for drivers who put protection first.

Rivian R1T

First shown in 2018, the electric pickup entered its second generation in 2024 with upgrades to motors, batteries, the cabin, and the infotainment system. Safety took a step up as well thanks to the addition of 11 high-sensitivity cameras. The updated R1T once again earned the highest IIHS safety scores, reinforcing its reputation among electric trucks.

Hyundai Santa Cruz

Introduced in 2022 as an “adventure vehicle,” the Santa Cruz received a styling refresh for 2025 and a special XRT version aimed at light off-road use. It stands out for its high level of protection, confirming its status as the best compact pickup by IIHS assessments. Compact dimensions with strong safety credentials remain a welcome combination in this niche.

Toyota Tacoma

The fourth-generation Tacoma launched in 2023. It comes with a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine, and a hybrid version is also available. The model earned the maximum rating in IIHS crash tests, underscoring the leap forward this generation represents for the nameplate.

Chevrolet Colorado

The third-generation midsize Colorado debuted in 2023. For 2025 it adds new colors and a Midnight Edition. Its safety test results are solid overall, with the caveat of weak base headlights; trims equipped with LED units address that concern. Choose the better lighting, and the Colorado feels properly sorted after dark.
