Chinese electric vehicle maker Xpeng has announced a strategic pivot that extends far beyond the automotive sector. The company is officially changing its Chinese name, dropping the word "automobiles" and adopting a "group" format.

Name Change and New Strategy

Starting April 1, 2026, Xpeng will be called "Xpeng Group" in the Chinese market. This symbolic but significant move reflects the company's business expansion. Meanwhile, its international name, Xpeng Inc, remains unchanged.

The company is actively investing in what it calls physical AI—technologies that combine artificial intelligence with real-world devices. Xpeng plans to advance autonomous driving, moving from Level 2+ to full Level 4 capability, while strengthening its position in the global smart car market.

Robots, Chips, and New Markets

At the same time, Xpeng is entering new segments. The company is preparing for mass production of humanoid robots by the end of 2026, targeting monthly volumes in the thousands.

It is also developing its own microelectronics: shipments of proprietary AI chips have already exceeded 200,000 units, with an annual target of around 1 million. Additionally, Xpeng is investing up to 7 billion yuan in research and development and launching a separate robotaxi division.

Xpeng is gradually transforming from an automaker into a full-cycle technology company. The name change is merely a formality, underpinned by a large-scale business transformation and an effort to secure a place in the future markets of AI, robotaxis, and autonomous systems.
