Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the second major update for the GLE, extending the model's lifecycle to the end of the decade. This move responds to shifting market demand, with interest in hybrids on key markets like the U.S. proving stronger than anticipated for electric vehicles.

The 2027 GLE emerges as a compromise product, bridging internal combustion and electrification to stay relevant amid uncertain market strategies.

Powertrains: Five Engines and a Focus on Hybrids

The updated GLE features around 3,000 revised components, including fully redesigned gasoline and diesel engines. The lineup offers five variants with power outputs ranging from 286 to 537 horsepower, while the top-tier AMG 53 model delivers 633 hp.

All versions come equipped with a 48-volt system featuring an integrated starter-generator. The plug-in hybrid GLE 450e gains more power and can travel up to 106 km on electric power alone, meeting European market requirements.

Digitalization: MB.OS and Superscreen

The GLE is among the first SUVs from the brand to feature the new MB.OS operating system, which integrates all vehicle functions. The system supports over-the-air updates and actively uses artificial intelligence to adapt to the driver.

Inside, the cabin features the MBUX Superscreen—three combined displays forming a single digital panel. The interface is now highly customizable and focused on personalization.

Comfort and Chassis: Betting on Intelligent Systems

Mercedes has enhanced the model's comfort with the adaptive E-Active Body Control suspension. This system analyzes road conditions in real time and adjusts the suspension for each wheel individually.

A cloud-based system is also employed, gathering data from other vehicles to pre-adjust settings. This approach improves ride smoothness without sacrificing handling.

Design and Positioning: Evolution Without Radicalism

Externally, the GLE retains its recognizable silhouette but receives updated lighting, a revised grille, and new light elements. The new Digital Light system expands the illumination area while reducing energy consumption.

The GLE Coupe remains in the lineup, accounting for about 30% of model sales. It targets a more emotional audience, offering the same technology in a sportier format.

Overall, the 2027 Mercedes GLE showcases the brand's pragmatic approach to the transition to electric vehicles. By focusing on hybrids and digital tech, Mercedes aims to maintain demand and hold its ground in the premium segment.
