U.S. outlet CarBuzz has compiled a ranking of the most reliable four-cylinder engines of all time, drawing on specialist forums and expert opinions. The top ten highlights powertrains that have proved their durability and faultless manners in everyday use.

Top honors went to Ford’s 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbo (2010–2018), which completed a one-million-mile endurance trial. That result is a pointed reminder that downsized turbo engines can be built to last when engineered right.

Close behind are Toyota’s legendary naturally aspirated 22R/22RE units, known for covering more than 800,000 kilometers without a major overhaul—an achievement that explains their almost cult following among long-term owners.

Toyota’s modern T24A Dynamic Force hybrid also made the list for its efficiency and reliability, with JD Power data backing its reputation. It’s a neat illustration that electrified drivetrains can pair thrift with staying power.

The ranking also nods to time-tested stalwarts: the Volvo B230 Redblock, BMW’s S14, Subaru’s EJ22, and Volkswagen’s third-generation EA888. Their presence shows how old-school engineering virtues—simple, robust, serviceable—still resonate.

Among newer designs, the Chevrolet 2.7 TurboMax and Hyundai’s Smartstream Gamma II stand out, while Honda’s revered K24 is noted for its ability to run up to a million miles. Few engines balance everyday usability and sheer stamina quite as convincingly.

Overall, the list underscores a clear takeaway: even as electric cars gain ground, classic internal combustion engines remain a benchmark for engineering reliability and longevity.
