McLaren P50 2026: Manual Gearbox, Price and Release Date Explained

McLaren left one technical question hanging ahead of its August 14 reveal, and it matters more than the still-unknown horsepower figure. The teaser for the new road car shows a manual gear lever, and the story is directly tied to the historic M6GT. If a genuine manual gearbox really is hiding behind that lever, it will be the first such production McLaren since the F1 went out of production in 1998.

The brand has not yet revealed the car’s name, its engine, or how the transmission actually works. So calling the newcomer the P50 is premature. That designation came from an earlier report by The Supercar Blog, which also mentioned a run of fewer than 100 examples and a price above $2.1 million. All three details currently remain unconfirmed.

There is an important technical caveat here. A lever, or even a clutch pedal, no longer guarantees a classic manual gearbox. In the Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale, the driver shifts through six virtual gears and works a clutch, yet underneath sits an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission with electronic control. Choosing the M6GT as the historical reference point is no accident either. Bruce McLaren’s project grew out of the M6A race car and was meant to turn the brand’s ideas into a road car, but it never reached full production. In 2026, McLaren has been pushing the M6GT back into the spotlight, including after its restoration by MSO.

The new car also fits neatly into a broader model-range relaunch: back in spring, McLaren’s next wave was expected to start unfolding over the summer of 2026. And the return of demand for analog driving feel is no longer an isolated experiment: Pagani keeps using genuine mechanical solutions, while Ferrari has taken the route of electronic emulation.

Three questions remain open for McLaren before August 14: whether it is really a manual gearbox, what engine sits behind it, and whether the run truly comes in under 100 cars. Those are the details that will separate a historic reveal from a flashy teaser.
