Tesla Roadster Flying Car Rumors: What Elon Musk Actually Said

Elon Musk has reignited talk of flying cars. Responding to a post about how humanity was promised such vehicles, the Tesla CEO gave a three-word reply on August 12: “You will get flying cars.” He named no maker, no model, and no timeline.

The interest centers above all on the long-delayed Tesla Roadster. Musk has repeatedly tied the upcoming sports car to SpaceX technology and has talked about the car being able to hover. In the fall of 2025 he also hinted the new car might go beyond the usual idea of what a car is. Those claims, however, have come from Musk himself, not from Tesla’s published production specifications.

On its current page, Roadster still lists a 0–60 mph time of 1.9 seconds, a top speed above 250 mph and 620 miles of range. Buyers can still put down a deposit there, but the spec list has no flight mode, no hover capability and no SpaceX rocket thrusters.

The Roadster itself also remains a work in progress. In its Q1 2026 report, Tesla listed the car’s status as Design development, with the production site still marked TBD. In August, Tesla chief designer Franz von Holzhausen said another reveal was coming “very soon,” but as of August 12 no production version had publicly debuted.

For now, Musk’s comment is best read as another teaser rather than confirmation of a “flying Tesla.” The core question — whether the future Roadster will actually be able to leave the ground, and in what form that could ever reach buyers — remains unanswered by the company.
