Mercedes-Benz has launched production of electric drive units (EDU) for the upcoming electric GLC crossover at the Star Assembly plant in Sebeș, Romania. The facility now sits at the heart of the brand’s global supply chain, shipping components to the plant in Bremen and, soon, to Kecskemét in Hungary—a clear vote of confidence in the site’s role within Europe.

The new building spans more than 30,000 square meters and brings assembly and logistics under one roof. Each drive unit combines an electric motor, a power electronics module, and a reduction gear, put together in over 200 operations along a line roughly a kilometer long. Notably, all employees were retrained in-house—an approach that underscores the company’s focus on sustainability while keeping hard-won expertise on the shop floor.

Production is fully carbon-neutral and powered by renewable energy. In the near future, the plant will be complemented by a 5-megawatt solar installation and a heat pump system, signaling a steady push to tighten the energy footprint.

With this step, the Romanian Star Assembly consolidates its status as a strategic hub for Mercedes-Benz, mirroring the brand’s shift toward full electrification and a stronger European presence in high-tech manufacturing.
