Mazda MX-5 2.0-litre UK 2027: why the 184hp engine is being discontinued

Mazda has closed UK orders for the naturally aspirated 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G MX-5, rated at 184hp. But it's not quite time to say goodbye to this version yet: Mazda UK expects stock to last until around January 2027. These cars remain available through the brand's official dealer network in the meantime.

The reason is tightening emissions requirements. Mazda explained that the 2.0-litre engine was already dropped from continental European markets back in 2024. The UK received a longer transition period thanks to different regulatory derogation timings, but that grace period has now ended.

The difference between the two remaining variants goes beyond power output. The UK's 2.0-litre develops 184hp with claimed CO2 emissions of 153g/km, while the 1.5-litre engine produces 132hp at 140g/km. A limited-slip differential was also offered on 2.0-litre versions — an important detail for buyers who chose the MX-5 for its sharper driving character.

The MX-5 itself isn’t disappearing from the UK market. Mazda will continue taking orders for the 1.5-litre, the engine the current ND generation was originally built around, according to the company. It remains a rear-wheel-drive two-seat roadster with a six-speed manual gearbox and a focus on low weight, but once stock runs out, buyers will no longer have a choice between two naturally aspirated engines.

So this isn’t about the MX-5 disappearing altogether — it’s the end of the most powerful version of the current UK line-up. Anyone wanting a new 184hp car has a few months left, and only while existing stock lasts.
