Volkswagen Mission Efficiency 2026: battery, consumption and real-world test route

Volkswagen has put Mission Efficiency on the road — a near-production electric prototype preparing for a record run from Wolfsburg to Vienna. One important clarification: the 780 km figure circulating in the media cannot yet be called the car’s driving range. The company has not disclosed the battery capacity, energy consumption or the distance actually covered.

On the official Mission Efficiency page, Volkswagen says the project is designed to test aerodynamics, energy efficiency and the suitability of an EV for normal use in real-world conditions. The car is fully functional and largely based on production technology, but the concept itself is not planned for sale. Volkswagen says it will reveal more information about the project on September 14, 2026.

Specialist publications estimate the Wolfsburg-to-Vienna route at roughly 780 km. That is where the striking claim of “780 km of real-world range” came from, but Volkswagen has not officially made such a statement. For now, it is simply an approximate length of the planned test.

The point of the project is different: Volkswagen is trying to extend driving distance not only by increasing battery capacity, but also by reducing energy demand. The teasers show a low nose, a smoothly sloping roof and aerodynamic wheels. That is particularly notable next to the production Volkswagen ID.3 Neo, which has a 50 kWh battery and a range of up to 417 km WLTP — Mission Efficiency is meant to show how much extra distance can be gained through efficiency alone.

That means the project’s actual results will not be known before September 14. The key figures to watch are battery capacity, average consumption in kWh/100 km, aerodynamic performance and the distance actually covered. Until those data are published, calling the new Volkswagen a 780-km EV is premature.
