BMW 3 Series 2027 plug-in hybrid: what is known about the PHEV

The third powertrain option for the new BMW 3 Series will be a plug-in hybrid. In the official release for the new generation, BMW says a PHEV will join the range in 2027. The company has not yet disclosed whether it will carry the 330e badge, nor has it published power output, battery capacity or electric range.

The current 330e provides the obvious reference point. It combines a 2.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor, produces 292 hp and uses a 19.5 kWh battery. Depending on the version, the official electric range is 85–101 km under the WLTP cycle in Europe. A longer range for the next generation would therefore be a logical step, but it is too early to claim that the new car will definitely exceed 100 km until BMW releases the specifications.

The family now uses a split architecture. The electric i3 is based on Neue Klasse and has already entered series production in Munich, while petrol and plug-in-hybrid 3 Series models will be built in Dingolfing. BMW separately states that the combustion-engine and PHEV cars produced there are intended for customers around the world.

This also changes the status of earlier information. In spring, a 330e hybrid had already appeared in a preliminary 2027 line-up, but at that point it was still a planned derivative. BMW has now officially confirmed the PHEV itself, while the 330e name still cannot be treated as final.
