Volvo Cars has officially unveiled the new XC70, a crossover that becomes the brand’s first long-travel plug-in hybrid. Its headline figure is an electric-only range of more than 200 km on the CLTC cycle, a record among Volvo hybrids.

Built on the new SMA platform and aimed primarily at the Chinese market, where preorders have already opened, the XC70 will arrive in Europe later. Inside the company, the model is positioned as a bridge to fully electric cars: it enables everyday zero-emission trips while keeping the flexibility of a gasoline engine, which together with the battery delivers up to 1,200 km of range.

The XC70 supports rapid charging from 0 to 80% in 23 minutes, offers bidirectional charging to power external devices, and carries a clean, aerodynamically honed Scandinavian design. The cabin emphasizes space and premium materials, with two large displays: a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a 15.4-inch central screen. Among the options is a 92-inch AR head-up display.

Safety takes center stage. The Safe Space Technology suite blends cameras, radars, and sensors, assists with lane changes and parking, and is designed to protect pedestrians and cyclists in urban environments.

Taken as a whole, the XC70 comes across as a strategically important move for Volvo—less a revolution than a deliberate step toward full electrification. For families weighing a purchase in 2025, its blend of practicality, comfort, and technology looks like a compelling package.
