Mazda is keeping its oldest hatchback alive: the Mazda2 has received another update for the Japanese market. The third generation, unveiled back in 2014 and twice heavily refreshed, enters the 2026 model year with richer standard equipment and an expanded options list, despite rumors that production could end soon.

The base 15C II now includes the Utility package with a split-folding rear seatback and tinted rear glass. The 15 BD i Selection II gains the Mazda Connect package with an 8.8-inch infotainment display, a surround-view camera system, parking sensors, and a TV tuner. The 15 Sport II adds heated seats and a heated steering wheel.

The most enticing configuration remains the 15MB, conceived as a foundation for track projects: a lightweight specification, a six-speed manual, and a slightly stronger naturally aspirated 1.5 Skyactiv-G delivering up to 116 hp—a setup that underscores the car’s enthusiast bent.

Also available are themed packages called Rookie Drive, Clap Pop, and Sci-Fi, plus an AutoExe sport body kit with a lip splitter, spoiler, diffuser, and lowered suspension—options that let owners dial in more personality or a sharper edge.

Under the hood is the familiar 1.5 Skyactiv-G with 109 or 116 hp, paired with either a manual or automatic transmission and offered with front- or all-wheel drive—a proven, straightforward powertrain menu.

Preorders are open now, with Japanese sales scheduled to start in early December. Pricing starts at 1.72 million yen (about 11,000 dollars). In Europe, the model has effectively been replaced by the Mazda2 Hybrid, which is a rebadged Toyota Yaris.
