Italy’s authorities conducted a trial test drive of a Tesla Model 3 fitted with the Full Self-Driving (FSD) system. At the wheel were Rome’s mayor Roberto Gualtieri and mobility expert Eugenio Patanè. It was the first time an Italian city’s mayor personally tried out FSD on the streets of Rome, a notable milestone for the capital.During the ride, the car showed an impressive knack for handling the kind of challenges common to major European cities: it dealt with heavy traffic, proceeded confidently through unsignalized intersections, navigated roundabouts, and followed traffic rules in areas with dense pedestrian flow. These are precisely the edge cases that separate promising technology from everyday usability. The demonstration formed part of Tesla’s wider program to ready its autonomous driving system for official certification in European Union countries, with completion planned for next year. Prior to this event, the automaker conducted similar trials in 17 EU states, with vehicles covering more than a million kilometers.
