Audi has announced that its first models built on a completely new Rivian software architecture will reach the market in 2028. The milestone marks a key phase in the collaboration between the German brand and the American company, backed by a $5 billion investment from Volkswagen Group.

According to Audi CEO Gernot Döllner, test prototypes are already in development within the Rivian–Volkswagen joint venture. The new system will debut on two models riding on an entirely fresh platform, and then be phased in across the range.

The project’s main aim is to cut complexity and accelerate development cycles. The revamped software will lean more on over-the-air updates, making it easier to add features and address issues more quickly.

At the same time, Audi intends to preserve physical controls, blending digital solutions with familiar buttons and premium materials. That approach reads as a pragmatic response in a market that too often trades usability for screen real estate. With interest in electrified models on the rise, the Audi and Rivian effort looks like a meaningful step toward elevating premium technology in the next wave of cars, and a 2028 start gives room for the careful validation such a rollout demands.
