AUDI—spelled exactly that way, without the four rings and in all caps—has unexpectedly become one of the most talked‑about “Chinese” Audi projects in Europe. The electric E5 Sportback, developed for China together with SAIC, sparked a rush at launch: reports mention more than 10,000 orders in the first half hour. One of the first cars has already surfaced in Germany via private import, instantly raising the question of why a model like this isn’t arriving on the EU market.

The appeal is obvious: the E5 Sportback feels like a product built on a different philosophy—more digital focus, more showpiece features, and aggressively pitched pricing. In China, the starting point is cited at roughly 32–40 thousand euros. Against that backdrop, the thought naturally follows that a comparable European‑built electric sedan with a similar brief would likely cost noticeably more, so Chinese‑market models end up competing not just with styling, but with the numbers, too.

Technically, the E5 makes a strong first impression. It’s about 4.88 meters long and carries a panoramic 59‑inch display across the cabin, complemented by expanded driver‑assistance features. Claimed outputs range from 220 kW (299 hp) to 579 kW (787 hp). Battery options include a 76.2‑kWh LFP pack and an approximately 100‑kWh NCM unit, while the quoted CLTC range tops out at 618–770 km.
