At IAA Mobility, one of the show’s most emotive premieres took the spotlight: the all-electric Renault 4 E-Tech Electric made its public debut. The French marque has revived the cult icon from the 1960s and turned it fully electric. The new 4 blends recognizable cues from the original with modern technology: square headlights, the characteristic rear side window and the signature body shape now pair with a two-tone finish and an LED-illuminated grille—a respectful nod to history without tipping into pastiche.

The EV carries a 52 kWh battery good for up to 409 km on the WLTP cycle. Power peaks at up to 150 hp, and 0–100 km/h takes around 9 seconds. Fast charging can bring the state of charge from 15 to 80 percent in 30 minutes. With 18.1 cm of ground clearance and 18-inch wheels, it’s ready not only for city duty but also for out-of-town trips—useful versatility in a compact footprint.

Practicality remains a core quality: the cargo area holds 420 liters, and with the seats folded it grows to 1,405 liters. The cabin features two 10-inch OpenR Link displays with Google services, plus a built-in Reno voice assistant powered by ChatGPT. The interface feels up to date and straightforward, the kind of tech suite that gets out of the way and lets the car’s character come through.

The Renault 4 E-Tech enters the compact electric crossover segment alongside the Volkswagen ID.3, Peugeot e-2008 and Mini Aceman. Its range sits close to the VW’s, yet it wins on price (from €20,300 including subsidies) and leans on charisma too—heritage design and broad personalization (over 600 trim options) give it an edge that numbers alone rarely capture.
