Beijing Benz has announced a major recall of 19,481 EQA and EQB electric vehicles produced between April 1, 2021, and March 12, 2024. The recall campaign begins on June 25, 2026, following a regulatory investigation into a potential defect. The issue stems from instability in the high-voltage battery production process. In some cases, this instability could reduce the reliability of battery modules. Additionally, the existing battery management system strategy might have placed excessive strain on individual cells, increasing the risk of an internal short circuit. In the worst-case scenario, this could lead to a vehicle fire. The manufacturer stated that it will replace the high-voltage batteries free of charge through its official dealer network. Until repairs are completed, the company advises owners to limit charging to 80% and park their vehicles outdoors when possible. This campaign expands on a previous recall announced in March 2025, which has now broadened the scope of affected vehicles. This situation highlights that even premium electric vehicles remain vulnerable to battery component quality. After all, the battery is currently the most complex and expensive part of an EV's design. As electric vehicles become more common, battery-related recalls are occurring more frequently. For Mercedes, addressing this issue promptly is crucial, as reputation in the premium EV segment depends not only on technology but also on trust in safety.
