BMW 2 million EVs 2026: Europe sales, iX3 orders and i3 production start

Two million — and now that count belongs to customers. BMW already celebrated building its two-millionth all-electric car back in May, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive from Dingolfing. The new milestone announced on August 27 is different: since the very first i3 launched in late 2013, BMW Group has now handed over 2 million BEVs to customers in total. That anniversary i5 M60 went to an owner in Spain.

The pace has clearly picked up. BMW reported handing over its 1.5-millionth BEV back in June 2025, so the next 500,000 cars took roughly 14 months. In other words, about a quarter of the brand’s entire cumulative BEV deliveries landed in just the last year or so. Counting plug-in hybrids as well, BMW Group has delivered around 3.5 million electrified vehicles to customers since 2013.

Europe is now the main engine behind that growth. In the second quarter, the region took delivery of 81,445 fully-electric BMW and MINI vehicles — up 38% year on year. Over the first half of the year, BEVs already accounted for around 28% of the group’s European sales. Roughly one in three electric BMWs ordered in the region is now an iX3, and within the X3 family, the electric version already accounts for one out of every two orders.

That surge shows clearly in the iX3’s own trajectory: this spring the model passed 50,000 European orders, and BMW now says it’s closing in on 100,000. Production of the second Neue Klasse car — the electric i3 — started in Munich on August 6, and the company says early demand for the sedan is strong as well.

Globally, BMW Group delivered 204,295 BEVs in the first half of 2026 — down 7.4% year on year. The growth is concentrated almost entirely in Europe, where the Neue Klasse is already offsetting weakness elsewhere, even as the group’s overall worldwide sales fell 4.2% over the first six months.

So the 2-million mark matters less on its own than the speed behind it. The more telling number is how fast that last 500,000 arrived, and how sharply Europe accelerated once the iX3 showed up. The next checkpoint isn’t far off: the iX3 actually crossing 100,000 orders, and the first customer deliveries of the new i3.
