Stellantis is exploring extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) technology developed by Chinese automaker Leapmotor. This system promises up to 900 kilometers of total range, with the new Leapmotor B10 REEV model potentially approaching 1,000 kilometers without frequent charging or refueling.

The technology operates on a series hybrid principle. Here, a gasoline engine doesn't drive the wheels directly. Instead, it kicks in when the battery charge drops to around 20–30%, generating electricity to power the electric motor or recharge the battery.

According to sources, this technology could be implemented across five Stellantis brands: Citroën, Peugeot, DS Automobiles, Fiat, and Opel. Notably, Lancia and Alfa Romeo are not on this list.

Leapmotor maintains strategic autonomy within the alliance, meaning the transfer of this key technology would require specific agreements. Stellantis, with its broad technical base, could bring its own assets to the negotiation table.

This interest in EREV stems from the fact that not all buyers are ready to fully commit to pure electric vehicles. For those considering new cars in 2026 who have concerns about range limitations and charging infrastructure, this type of system could offer a practical compromise.
