Experts have weighed in on the pros and cons of the Mercedes-Benz CLA EV. Let's start with the electric model's strengths.

Smooth Power Delivery

The CLA takes a different approach to power delivery. It's not as aggressive as some EVs that unleash all torque from a standstill, but acceleration is quick and speed builds linearly. Power comes on gradually and smoothly, with special modes available to fine-tune throttle response. Mercedes claims a 0-100 km/h time of 6.7 seconds, which is quite rapid.

Impressive Efficiency

During testing, the CLA showed an average consumption of 6.3 km/kWh, translating to a real-world range of 535 km. Regardless of driving style, you can expect over 500 km of range—a commendable figure. For context, the WLTP-rated range for the CLA 200 and CLA 250+ is 542 km and 792 km, respectively.

Balanced Ride and Handling

Driving the CLA is enjoyable thanks to its rear-wheel-drive setup. The steering responds well to driver inputs, feeling light at low speeds and more responsive at higher ones. Mercedes has also tweaked the ground clearance and suspension to better suit local road conditions. The increased ride height handles most speed bumps easily, while body roll in corners is minimal. Although the suspension is on the firm side, it provides a smooth ride at any speed and absorbs bumps with ease.

Now, let's look at the Mercedes-Benz CLA EV's drawbacks.

Uncomfortable Rear Seats

Seat comfort isn't the CLA's strong suit. Its wheelbase is longer than the previous combustion-engine CLA, offering ample legroom. However, the battery placement under the floor compromises thigh support, leading to an awkward leg position. The sloping roofline and upright seatback don't help, making the CLA less suitable for those accustomed to chauffeur-driven comfort. This legroom issue extends to the front seats as well. While the front seats offer good cushioning and support, they might feel a bit snug for larger individuals.

No Physical Buttons

Too many functions are concentrated on the touchscreen, which proves inconvenient. Despite having high-tech, intuitive screens, the CLA lacks physical controls. There are capacitive touch buttons below the infotainment screen for volume and drive mode selection, but accessing features like climate control and others requires using the touchscreen. This forces drivers to take their eyes off the road, creating a safety concern while driving.
