A new ADAC study has delivered a surprising result: the most affordable Italian model to maintain isn't the Fiat Panda, but the compact, mild-hybrid Fiat 500.

According to experts, the monthly cost of ownership for the Fiat 500 comes to roughly €352, or about €4,200 annually. This calculation includes all key expenses—fuel, insurance, maintenance, tire wear, and scheduled repairs—based on an average annual mileage of 15,000 kilometers.

Second place went to the commercial Fiat Doblo with a diesel engine, confirming that diesel remains advantageous for high-mileage drivers. The Panda rounds out the top three, despite previously being considered the benchmark for affordability.

However, the absolute leader in Europe is the Dacia Sandero, with monthly costs around €318. This makes it one of the most rational choices for buyers seeking minimal expenses. Interestingly, mild-hybrid systems prove particularly efficient in urban settings, while diesel retains its relevance for long-distance driving.

Experts also note a general rise in car ownership costs, driven by inflation, expensive parts, and stricter environmental regulations. As a result, the choice of vehicle increasingly depends not on the purchase price, but on the total cost of ownership—an area where compact models are again taking the lead.

The market is gradually shifting toward rationality: buyers are more frequently calculating long-term costs. In this new economic reality, models like the Fiat 500 or Sandero are becoming logical choices.
