Toyota has transferred production of the Corolla Cross to its Iwate Plant, operated by Toyota Motor East Japan. Previously built at the Takaoka facility, the popular SUV is now being assembled in the Tohoku region, which continues its long-term recovery from the 2011 earthquake. The move is not only about production but also about revitalization: Iwate Governor Takuya Tasso described it as «another treasure made in Iwate.»

Since its launch in 1966, the Corolla has sold more than 50 million units worldwide. With the Corolla Cross now produced in Iwate, Toyota is reinforcing its strategy of local manufacturing to support regional industry. Chairman Akio Toyoda has often emphasized that true recovery means creating sustainable jobs, profits and taxes through long-term operations.

In July, Toyota hosted a Corolla fan event in Iwate, gathering nearly 80 participants from across Japan. Looking ahead, the prefecture will also host a Rally Challenge pre-event in February 2026, fulfilling the dream of local driver Masahiro Sasaki. The Corolla Cross made in Iwate thus becomes more than a car — it’s a message of resilience and a symbol of the region’s future.
