Ford Motor Company has announced a large recall of 332,778 Mustang models built from 2015 to 2017 due to a seat-belt defect. In affected coupes and convertibles, corrosion can develop on the seat-belt pretensioner’s anchor cable, which over time may lead to failure. The parts were supplied by Joyson Safety Systems, a company formed after Ningbo Joyson Electronic acquired Takata. The issue surfaced following a Transport Canada investigation, which found the cables had been exposed to saltwater, accelerating corrosion.During its own review, Ford logged more than 5,000 owner complaints and letters, along with instances of the cable separating from the pretensioner mechanism. The automaker initially considered limiting the campaign to regions with harsher environments, but NHTSA required a recall of all Mustangs from those model years. For a safety-critical component like a seat-belt system, that broader net reads like the sensible choice. The vehicles were built from February 14, 2014, to October 2, 2017, at the Flat Rock plant in Michigan. As part of the remedy, dealers will replace all pretensioner assemblies and trim the carpeting to help prevent repeat moisture exposure. Owner notifications are scheduled between January 1 and March 31, 2026. The fix may sound simple, but with restraints, a conservative approach is the only acceptable one. This recall covers the S550 generation, which precedes the current S650, where Ford has already introduced updated EcoBoost and Coyote engines.
