Tesla and South Korea’s Samsung SDI have reached a major battery-supply agreement for energy storage systems worth more than 3 trillion won, or about $2.1 billion, Korea Economic Daily reported, citing an industry source. The contract is set for three years and would be among the largest collaborations between the two companies.

According to the publication, the deal covers batteries for Tesla’s Megapack grid-scale systems, which the company is rolling out across the United States, Europe, and Australia. These units help stabilize electricity networks and store power generated from renewable sources.

Samsung SDI said the final decision had not yet been made, while sources maintained that the sides had already aligned on the key terms. Tesla has not provided a comment.

If completed, the agreement would reinforce Samsung SDI’s position as a leading energy-solutions supplier and help Tesla accelerate the build-out of Tesla Energy, a line of business that is becoming increasingly profitable alongside car sales. The scale and multi-year horizon point to a market where grid storage is moving from pilot projects to core infrastructure.
