Buick is once again grappling with a safety issue: General Motors has announced a third recall for 2014 Verano sedans, citing a potentially dangerous defect in the car’s roof-mounted airbag system.

According to GM, the problem involves the Roof Rail Airbags—side airbags installed in the headliner above the occupants. Due to a manufacturing flaw in the welds, the inflator housing can rupture when deployed, leading to only partial inflation and sending metal fragments into the cabin. It’s a stark reminder that even mature safety technology can become hazardous when a small manufacturing step fails.

The company notes that such an incident could result in injuries to people inside the vehicle and to those nearby. To address the issue, Buick dealers will replace the airbag modules on both sides at no cost to owners. A straightforward fix, but a critical one given where these airbags sit and the role they play in side-impact protection.

Similar campaigns were already carried out in 2023 and 2024; now, additional batches of defective parts have been identified. The recall also extends to a portion of 2014 Chevrolet Cruze sedans. A third round underlines how persistent a defect can be across parts lots, even when earlier actions seemed to contain it.

Owners will receive official notifications with instructions on how to proceed with dealer appointments. Until repairs are completed, dealers are not allowed to sell or deliver vehicles that may be affected.
