CATL says series production of battery cells at its Debrecen plant will begin in March or April next year, with the exact timing contingent on final permits. Module assembly is already underway: in 2024, around 30,000 modules were built using cells supplied from the company’s other factories.

Installation of the production lines is still in progress, and headcount is set to rise from 1,000 to 1,500 in the first quarter. Management indicates that Debrecen will turn out a battery designed for electric cars with a range of more than 750 km. If delivered, that endurance would put the pack at the sharp end of the market, and Mercedes-Benz has previously been mentioned among potential customers.

CATL has also submitted an updated environmental filing: it cites a 43% reduction in emissions, with drinking-water use and energy consumption cut by a third. The plant is scheduled to connect to the municipal water supply in spring; for now, it uses a mix of rainwater and water from the Tisza River. The targets look solid on paper, though the real verdict will come once full-scale operations settle in.
