At the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon, a radically reimagined previous-generation Toyota Alphard became one of the most talked-about exhibits. The luxury family minivan has been transformed into a full-fledged off-road build, looking closer to a Mitsubishi Delica D:5 than to the usual VIP shuttles. The transformation feels intentional rather than a novelty.

The main visual change—a fully blacked-out front fascia with a reinforced bumper guard and substantial LED lighting. Seven round spotlights sit on the roof, while the lower section gains protection and auxiliary illumination for rough terrain. The blackout treatment gives the Alphard a more purposeful face. The suspension is clearly lifted with bright mint springs, and the wheels are swapped for Toyo Open Country R/T tires paired with matte pseudo-beadlock rims.

To fit the wider tires, the body gets rugged, riveted overfenders. At the rear, an external paired holder carries a full-size spare—equipment usually seen on true SUVs. Nearby, recovery boards in the same mint hue underline the vehicle’s expedition bent. The hardware reads more earnest than theatrical.

A sizable expedition rack crowns the roof, with provision for a side awning. Taken together, the Alphard shifts from a symbol of comfort to an expedition vehicle that draws attention not only in a parking lot but also on a forest trail.

The project shows how far customization can go when you want family comfort, a desire to stand out, and the readiness to go where an Alphard normally wouldn’t.
