In Germany, a Mazda CX-60 was involved in a worrying incident: at roughly 140 km/h, its side curtain airbags deployed without warning. The owner insists there was neither a crash nor any large road imperfection that could have triggered the system.

According to the driver, after the deployment the CX-60 could only be coaxed to the nearest exit, where the vehicle then shut down the engine and cut power as if it had detected a collision. Fortunately, the front airbags and the driver’s-side curtains did not go off; otherwise the outcome could have been far more serious. The driver sustained only minor burns.

Mazda quickly dispatched a tow truck and took the car in for diagnostics. The crossover was just three years old with about 50,000 kilometers on the odometer. Results of the inspection are not yet available, but this is not the first such report: earlier, CX-50 owners also complained about unexpected airbag deployment.

Stories like this bruise a brand more than minor technical niggles. Airbags are a matter of trust, and an uncommanded deployment at highway pace is more than a scare—it undermines confidence in the very safety net drivers rely on. Mazda will now have to show that these are isolated incidents rather than a systemic issue.
