The Volkswagen Group is considering expanding its lineup of electric vehicles to be assembled in Spain and Portugal. Following the EU's decision to create the M1E category for small electric cars, the company is revisiting the launch of two models previously shelved in 2021: the Audi A1 e-tron and the Skoda Fabia EV. According to La Tribuna de Automoción, the A1 has almost received the green light, while the Fabia remains uncertain.

These projects align with VW's strategy to establish a unified Iberian cluster. Martorell is already designated for the B-segment and is preparing to produce the CUPRA Raval and Volkswagen ID. Polo on the MEB+ platform. Landaben will handle B-SUVs, and Palmela will focus on the A-segment. Adding Audi and Skoda models would boost capacity utilization in Barcelona and improve the cluster's profitability.

Production is unlikely to start before the end of the decade: the A1 e-tron could launch in 2029–2030, with the Fabia following in 2031–2032. This timing coincides with the life cycle of current models and allows the use of infrastructure developed for the Raval and ID. Polo. Meanwhile, SEAT might have an opportunity to revive the Ibiza in electric form if Skoda decides to electrify the Fabia.

Unions at Martorell are pushing for a second platform—the SSP—which would underpin future models like the CUPRA Terramar, Tavascan, and Formentor. Combining MEB+ and SSP would ensure stable plant utilization and enable VW to scale up electric vehicle production in the region.

The decision will be made as part of the 2027/2028 product strategy. However, it's already clear that small EVs are back in focus for VW brands, and the Iberian Peninsula could become a key production hub.
