Volvo Cars has announced plans to increase production of its fully electric EX60 SUV in 2026. This move comes in response to unexpectedly high demand across Sweden, Germany, and other European markets, just one month after the model's global debut.

According to company data, Sweden alone has already seen over 3,000 orders placed. Order rates have significantly exceeded internal forecasts and even surpassed the launch performance of the more affordable EX30 in 2023. This detail matters because it highlights the strong market reception despite the EX60's positioning in a premium segment.

Notably, orders are currently only being accepted in Europe, with the U.S. launch scheduled for later in the spring.

Volvo intends to ramp up EX60 production at its Torslanda plant in Sweden. The company is already in discussions with unions about potentially extending plant operations by one additional week during the summer—a first in the brand's history. In practice, this means Volvo is taking unprecedented steps to meet demand.

The EX60 is positioned as a strategically crucial model for Volvo. Its demand surge is particularly striking against the backdrop of a slowing European EV market. If Volvo can maintain order momentum after entering the U.S. market, the EX60 could become the brand's primary profit driver between 2026 and 2028.

Overall, the picture is straightforward: the production flexibility at Torslanda showcases Volvo's shift toward a more adaptive manufacturing model. This approach allows for rapid scaling without constructing new facilities, reducing capital risks and strengthening Volvo's competitive stance against rivals like the next-generation BMW iX3 and the new-cycle Mercedes EQC.
