Ford is seriously considering turning its Dakar prototype, the Raptor T1+, into a production road car. CEO Jim Farley emphasized that motorsport involvement for the company is not just marketing, but part of the engineering cycle. The rally T1+ should become a product we sell, according to the executive.

The Raptor T1+ is built to full rally marathon specifications: a steel spaceframe, carbon panels, a 5.0-liter V8 based on the Mustang GT, Fox suspension with up to 350mm of travel, and 400mm of ground clearance. This vehicle allowed Ford to announce its presence in the Dakar world, and now it could form the basis for a new class of super-off-roaders.

Farley points out that the boundary between supercars and off-road models is blurring. Partially hybrid powertrains, electronic damper control, advanced torque vectoring, and digital integration enable the creation of a supercar equally fast on track and off-road. Ford believes it could become the Porsche of off-roading and break the rules.

Details of the future model remain undisclosed, but Farley previously mentioned a concept for a partially electrified vehicle with around 1,000 horsepower. If approved, the project could open a new segment of ultra-capable production off-roaders that combine rally potential with road legality.
