Toyota has introduced a new variant of the legendary Land Cruiser 79. This model features a 2.8 GD-6 diesel engine paired with a five-speed manual transmission, expanding the double-cab lineup.

Previously, this engine was only available with a six-speed automatic. Now, the manual version is also offered for the double-cab configuration. This new variant is priced about 30,000 rand cheaper than the automatic version.

The 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine produces 150 kW of power. However, with the manual gearbox, maximum torque is 450 Nm, compared to 500 Nm for the automatic. Peak torque is available between 2,400 and 3,000 rpm, while the automatic version achieves it from as low as 1,600 rpm.

This engine is well-known from other Toyota models, including the Hilux, Fortuner, and Land Cruiser Prado. Meanwhile, the Land Cruiser 79 range still includes a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated V6 petrol engine and a classic 4.2-liter diesel.

The new version is now the second most affordable in the Land Cruiser 79 double-cab lineup. It retains a full suite of off-road capabilities and is built for tough conditions.

Alongside this update, Toyota has revised the service terms for the model. The Land Cruiser 79 now comes with a service package covering nine services or 90,000 kilometers, making ownership of this iconic off-roader more predictable in terms of costs.
