Consumer Reports experts have compiled a list of hybrid cars that delivered the strongest fuel-economy results in testing. Here are the standouts, with the key numbers and where each one makes the most sense.

Kia Niro Plug-In Hybrid

Fuel economy (average): 5 L/100 km. Price: $35,935.

Thanks to a powerful battery, it can travel up to 33 miles on electricity alone. If your routine is mostly short trips and you can plug in often, this plug-in makes clear sense. If charging will be infrequent, the regular hybrid is the smarter play, as it’s lighter and costs less.

Toyota Corolla Hybrid

Fuel economy (average): 4.9 L/100 km. Price: $25,735.

Compared with the gasoline-only Corolla, the Hybrid can cut annual fuel costs by up to $400. It also brings a set of useful features not found in the base gas model, which strengthens its value proposition.

Hyundai Elantra Hybrid

Fuel economy (average): 4.9 L/100 km. Price: $26,695.

Priced in the same ballpark as the Toyota Corolla Hybrid, the Elantra Hybrid distinguishes itself with attractive pricing, confident handling, and a comfortable cabin. The supple suspension and modern, elegant exterior design leave a particularly strong impression.

Toyota Camry

Fuel economy (average): 4.9 L/100 km. Price: $29,795.

A fresh body design and a modern interior give the Camry a polished, respectable presence. Add in excellent fuel efficiency, and it delivers a persuasive blend of price and value for its segment.

Toyota Prius

Fuel economy (average): 4.61 L/100 km. Price: $29,710.

The Prius leads its peers on fuel efficiency, translating directly into savings at the pump. The cabin is comfortable and thoughtfully laid out, and the design looks convincingly contemporary.
