Nissan North America has announced a recall of 51 Nissan LEAF electric vehicles from the 2026 model year in the United States. According to SPEEDME experts, the campaign is registered with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) under number 26V188.

What's Behind the Recall

The recall stems from a potential fault in the high-voltage traction battery. Damage to the edges of the cathode material in battery cells may have occurred during production by the supplier. This defect could lead to an internal short circuit in a battery module.

In the event of a short circuit, the battery might overheat and cause a thermal event, including fire, raising the risk of property damage and personal injury.

Which Models Are Affected

The recall covers 51 Nissan LEAF electric vehicles from the 2026 model year, manufactured between July 17 and November 26, 2025, at the Tochigi plant in Japan.

The problematic batteries were supplied by Automotive Energy Supply Corporation (AESC). All affected vehicles have precise traceability from the battery module to the VIN, and Nissan estimates the defect could be present in 100% of the recalled cars.

How the Defect Will Be Fixed

Until repairs are complete, owners are advised not to charge their vehicles and to park them outdoors away from buildings. Dealers will conduct inspections and replace battery modules or the entire traction battery at no cost.

Preliminary owner notifications will begin mailing on April 17, 2026. Until the defect is resolved, Nissan is providing owners with loaner vehicles.
