A Cox Automotive study shows 19% of all car buyers and 25% of new-car shoppers now turn to AI tools like ChatGPT before stepping into a dealership.

Consumer trust in artificial intelligence as a car-shopping companion keeps climbing. According to Automotive News, citing a Cox Automotive study, 19% of all vehicle buyers and 25% of those purchasing a new car now rely on AI tools such as ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews during the shopping process.

These platforms help shoppers pull up the information they need and compare models online — answering questions instantly and laying out spec-by-spec comparisons.

Satisfaction among buyers who used AI assistants reaches 59%. The main reason behind that score is straightforward: AI noticeably simplifies the search-and-buy process, cutting decision time and helping shoppers make an informed choice.

Younger generations are leading the shift. Gen Z and Millennials form the core audience for these services, drawn by their natural comfort with modern tech and the convenience of online interactions.

What is more, 83% of respondents believe AI’s role in car buying will only grow over the next decade. Analysts expect further expansion of personalized recommendations, discount offers and assistance across every stage of the buyer journey — from first browsing a model to closing the deal and servicing the vehicle afterward.
