Time magazine has named the flagship Tesla Model S one of the best inventions of the 2000s, reinforcing the brand’s momentum after the Tesla Model 3 appeared in a similar list in 2017.

Although the Model S was not the first electric car, it propelled battery-powered mobility into the mainstream, reshaping the auto industry and shifting consumer attitudes around the world. Time underscored that its debut became a turning point for the sector, sharply boosting demand for electric vehicles and sparking fresh interest in innovative transportation. That judgment feels justified—few cars have changed perceptions so quickly.

Today, however, sales of this model have eased and account for only a small share of Tesla’s overall production. The trend reflects the arrival of newer models and the ongoing refreshes within the brand’s lineup.

After a series of updates to the Model S and the related Model X SUV, rumors have surfaced about a possible phased discontinuation. There have been no official statements about the future of these models, so for now any talk remains just that—rumor.
