Ford has announced a sweeping recall of nearly 625,000 vehicles in the United States over two separate issues—seat-belt defects and a malfunctioning rearview camera. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the action covers 332,778 Ford Mustang coupes and 291,901 F-250, F-350, and F-450 Super Duty pickups. The scale is hard to miss, stretching from a performance coupe to heavy-duty trucks and bringing very different owners into dealerships. The seat-belt concern stems from potential rubbing of the mounting hardware against the carpet, which can damage cables and reduce the restraint system’s effectiveness. Dealers will inspect vehicles and, if necessary, replace parts and trim back carpet sections that contact the belt mechanism. It’s a straightforward remedy aimed at eliminating a small chafe point that could compromise a critical safety feature. The other issue involves the rear camera system. A software fault may keep the image-processing module from displaying a picture on the screen, raising the risk of a collision while reversing. Dealers will address it with a software update at no charge to owners—a simple fix on paper that restores the essential view behind the vehicle.Ford indicated there have been no reports to date of crashes or injuries tied to these defects. Even so, the company urges owners to contact dealers without delay for an inspection, a prudent step to remove any lingering safety risk.
